Until now we learnt how to create a job winning resume, by keeping it short and simple.
Your resume may not necessarily give you a shot at the interview. Chances are that your resume may get rejected even after you having all the skills required to perform at the Job.
You now may be calculating how many applications you have sent 50 or 100 and why there was no interview call till now. Recruiters have hundreds of resumes to comb through every day. So, while screening the resume, they’ll simply trash it that doesn’t meet what they are looking for.
To learn more about how you could avoid your resume from being thrown into trash, let’s look at few parameters.
Your Resume does not match the JD
Most candidates in desperation start applying to Jobs posted without carefully reading the JD. You should first check the requirements listed in the Job description and confirm that you have the skills and experience the company is looking for. This is the first exit gate for many. Always read the Job description and ensure that your resume matches the Job description.
For more than 1 lakh jobs posted more than 1 crore resume’s end up in trash. I spoke about the math earlier in the article. Job seekers make this mistake more often than you might think.
If the JD is asking for 5 years of experience and you have 3 years of relevant experience, don’t apply for the Job. Candidates should look at the JD more seriously and understand its requirements. Resumes just won’t be considered if the basic skills aren’t there.
Learn to prepare your resume as per the JD. A common mistake that most candidates do is they use the same resume for all jobs they apply.
For example, if you’re applying for a position in Advertising Sales, but your experience is a combination of Designing and sales, tailor your resume to focus on your Sales experience and skills, and minimize—or even remove—the designing information.
Prepare your resume in such a way that you show your experience, skills, and personality are a perfect fit for the job. List out you accomplishments that you know will make an impact. Remember you should aim for a perfect match.
Pay Attention to even small Details
What we think could work or is okay and looks good may not be liked by the recruiter.
Check whether the text on your cover letter and resume is the same font and size. Use just 1 font in your resume. If your margins are off, recruiters may find it difficult to print your resume.
When you address the cover letter do not use “sir,” “madam,” or “to whom it may concern” it should be the recruiter’s name.
If they have asked you send some details along with your resume like current CTC and expected salary they’ll take note if you don’t include it. Be sure to include everything that’s asked of you.
One spelling error and you’re out. Always proofread your resume, don’t rely on spell check and grammar check alone. Take help from friends or family and let them proof read it for you.
Always remember you are not the only applicant for the job, follow these simple rules, you’ll make sure your resume gets past the first hurdle and if you tailor your resume according to the JD you’ll definitely increase your chances of getting your interview call.
