While most of the world’s economies are dealing with recession, getting a decent job has become tough and competitive.
Having said that, every year lakhs of students are entering the job market. As an example; in India alone you would see lakhs of engineers being churned out with most of them having the same skill set. The same is true for other fields too. The only differentiating factor among the candidates is their communication skills.

Organizations nowadays prefer candidates with greater fluency in the language over the other skills since most communication in offices happens in English language. By enhancing your English speaking abilities you can almost double your chances of getting a job and justify your CV.

With Job opportunities not just limited to India alone, the world is become a smaller place. Indians are employed all over the world. United States is a good example of Indians making their mark globally. In order to make the most of a globalized job market, English language skills are critical.

So let’s look at a quick quiz here:
What do employers look for in prospective employees? Any guesses?

Language proficiency is one of the major things.

Whatever country you are in, communication and interaction are very crucial. English is usually required because it is the international language used by people around the world. For example:  businesses, consumers, and sellers around the world communicate through the English language.
Learning the English language is very important not only when planning to look for a job in India but also when planning to go abroad and find employment in other countries.

As earlier stated a lot of companies today prefer applicants with good communication skills especially in English or as the second language of people who are non-English speakers. In any interview if you cannot properly speak English, it would be a big disadvantage.

According to statistics, more than 60% of the total mails in the whole world are written in English, 80% of data and electronically stored information are in English, and 60% of communications done online or through the internet are done using English language.

It is acceptable to consider that English is a dominant language worldwide and learning it will definitely give you an advantage.
Learning English in your free time is a good way to put your time you have in-between jobs to good use.

In India we speak many languages- Hindi, English and major influence of regional languages spoken in each state. However, the official business language of the world is English. And with India fast becoming a global economy, it comes as no surprise that companies are increasingly focusing on English language Skills of candidates.

Though companies may not expect candidates to be proficient in English they sure expect them to have good sense of the language while speaking and writing.

As seen companies increasingly prefer candidates with good soft skills, English language being an important part of that. The ability to communicate well in English opens the path to faster progress in your chosen field. So if you think you can make fast progress in your career solely based on your talent and skills, you are wrong.

A 2013 report by Aspiring Minds, India’s ‘leading employability Solutions Company’ concludes that 47% of graduates are not employable in any sector of the knowledge economy, given their English language and cognitive skills. The problem is even worse for students from smaller towns and cities (Aspiring Minds, 2013: 7).

The importance of English language in the job market cannot be undermined.
